Most "best AEO tools" posts are written for a buyer who does not exist: a brand with a committee, a procurement process and a five-figure budget.

If you are a solo marketer, a founder doing your own marketing, or a small team with one person on SEO, that buyer is not you. You do not need agent analytics across forty prompt clusters. You need to know whether ChatGPT mentions you, whether it says something wrong about you, and whether any of this is turning into actual traffic. On a budget you can defend to yourself.

So this is the version I wish existed when I started. A budget-first look at the tools that make sense at the small end.

One disclosure up front, because you should weigh everything I say against it: I build one of these tools. I founded LLM Pulse. I am going to tell you where other tools beat mine anyway, because that is the only way this is useful to you.

What a small brand actually needs

Let me strip the category down to what matters when you are small.

You need to track a handful of prompts. Not fifty, not five hundred. The ten to thirty questions a real customer would type into ChatGPT or Perplexity where you should show up. "Best CRM for freelancers." "Alternatives to [the big competitor]." "Is [your brand] any good."

You need to see who else shows up next to you. Your share of voice against the three or four competitors you actually lose deals to.

You need to catch it when the AI says something wrong. AI models hallucinate about small brands constantly, because there is less written about you to anchor on. A tool that quotes you the exact sentence ChatGPT uses is worth more than a dashboard of pretty graphs.

And, eventually, you want to know if any of this pays. Whether ChatGPT and Perplexity are sending real people who buy.

That is the whole job. Everything above that is enterprise gear you are being asked to rent.

The thing nobody tells you: the growth tax

Here is the trap I watched a lot of small brands walk into.

You sign up for a cheap starter plan. Then you add a teammate. Then your freelancer needs a login. Then your client wants to see the dashboard. Suddenly the "$29 tool" is $120 because every seat costs extra, and you are paying more for logins than for data.

Per-seat pricing is a tax on growing. For a small team it is the single most expensive line you never budgeted for. When you compare tools, look at the seat policy before you look at the headline price. It moves the real number more than the sticker does.

The good news: most of the honest tools at this end give you unlimited seats. That should be your baseline expectation, not a premium feature.

The budget contenders

Four tools are worth your attention if you are small and cost matters. Here is where each one actually fits.

Otterly.ai: the cheapest honest entry

If your budget is genuinely tiny, Otterly is the most honest cheap option in the category. The Lite plan is $29 a month for 15 prompts, which is enough to cover the core questions for one small brand.

What you get that punches above the price: screenshots of the real AI outputs (so you see exactly what the model said, not a paraphrase), a Brand Visibility Index, link citation tracking, and AI keyword research with prompt intent volume. It covers 50+ countries and gives you unlimited team members even down here, so no growth tax. It also ships an MCP server, a public API and a Claude skill, which is unusual at this price.

The honest caveat: 15 prompts is tight, and some of the newer engines are add-ons on the lower tiers, so read the model list before you assume everything is included. If you outgrow Lite, Standard jumps to $189 for 100 prompts, which is a big step.

For a single brand testing the water on the smallest possible spend, Otterly is the one I point people to without hesitation.

LLM Pulse: what I built, and who it is for

Since I build it, take this section with the appropriate salt. I will keep it to facts.

LLM Pulse starts at 49 € a month for the Starter plan: 50 prompts and 5 competitors. The reason I priced the entry above Otterly's $29 is prompt count and models. On every plan, including Starter, you track five core models: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Most tools make you pay up or book an enterprise call to get that spread. Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI can be added on top.

Seats are unlimited on every plan, no per-seat fee. So no growth tax. There is a 14-day trial.

The feature I would actually point a small brand to is the hosted MCP server: 45+ tools over OAuth, no API key, included on every plan and even in the trial. You connect it to Claude or ChatGPT and pull your own visibility data straight into a conversation. "Where did I lose share this week and to whom." That is still rare in this category.

The 99 € Growth plan is where it gets interesting for someone taking this seriously: 150 prompts, plus sentiment, AI traffic analytics and the agent. That AI traffic piece matters. Connect GA4 or Plausible and you see actual visits, conversions and sales that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini send you, not just mentions. Mentions are a vanity metric until you can tie them to someone spending money.

Where I would not oversell it: if all you need is to watch 15 prompts for one brand and spend as little as humanly possible, Otterly is cheaper and does that job. LLM Pulse earns its price when you want more models, more prompts, the traffic connection and the MCP without ever talking to a salesperson.

Peec AI: when the small team is an agency in waiting

Peec starts around $89 a month for roughly 25 prompts, then about $199 for ~100 prompts and ~$499 for ~300. Unlimited seats on all plans, daily tracking and sentiment across the board.

Where Peec is genuinely strong is regional and multi-language tracking with competitor comparison by country. If you are small but sell across a few markets, or you are a one-person shop about to take on clients in different countries, that is a real edge.

The thing to check before you buy: 3 models are included, and extra models are paid add-ons priced per model. So the sticker price can climb once you want the full engine spread. Do the maths on the models you care about, not the base plan.

Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Toolkit: the "already paying" option

If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, both bundle AI-visibility features now. Brand Radar and the AI Toolkit are shallower than any of the specialists above. But they are already in your subscription.

For a small brand that is watching cash, "good enough and free because I already pay for it" is a completely valid answer. Start there, see if AI visibility is a channel worth real attention for you, and only then pay for a dedicated tool. I would rather you did that than overspend on day one on my say-so.

What I would skip while you are small

Profound is the enterprise heavyweight, and it deserves the reputation. The data depth is the best in the category: Prompt Volumes, Shopping, Agents, Agent Analytics, plus SOC 2, SSO, on-prem and a full API. If you are a large brand, it is a serious answer.

But there is no public pricing, it is demo-led, and deployments reportedly land in the low thousands per month. That is not a small-brand tool, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. File it under "when you have grown into a problem that big."

How to actually choose in one afternoon

Do not agonise over this. The stakes at 29 € to 99 € a month are low, and every option here has a trial or a monthly plan you can cancel.

Write down your ten most important prompts first. The real customer questions. If you cannot fill ten, you have your answer about how much tool you need.

If money is the hard constraint and you have one brand, start with Otterly's Lite plan. If you want more models and the traffic connection without an enterprise call, trial LLM Pulse. If you sell across countries, trial Peec. If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, open Brand Radar or the AI Toolkit tonight before you spend another euro.

Then commit for two months and actually read the data. The tool is not the work. Showing up in the answers is the work.

The smallest brands I see winning at this are not the ones with the fanciest dashboard. They are the ones who picked something cheap, checked it every Monday, and fixed the one wrong thing the AI kept saying about them.
