Every week someone asks me the same question. "Do I really need another tool to track AI visibility, or can I just use the thing inside Semrush?"
It is a fair question, and the honest answer annoys the vendors on both sides: it depends, and for a lot of people the bundled feature is genuinely fine to start with.
Let me be upfront before I say anything else. I build LLM Pulse, one of the dedicated tools in this category. So I have skin in the game and you should read the rest with that in mind. I have tried to be fair anyway, because the fastest way to lose a reader's trust is to pretend the competition is bad. It is not.
Here is what I actually think.
What the bundled suites give you
Both big SEO suites now ship AI visibility features, and if you already pay for one, you already have this.
Semrush AI Toolkit tracks how often your brand shows up in AI answers, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI results. You set up a topic or a set of prompts, it measures your presence and share of voice against competitors, shows sentiment, and flags the sources those answers cite. It sits next to your keyword and backlink data, which is the whole point.
Ahrefs Brand Radar does a similar job from the other direction. Ahrefs has spent years building a massive index of pages and citations, so Brand Radar is strong at telling you which pages and domains get cited in AI answers, and how your mentions trend over time. Again, it lives inside a tool you probably already open every day.
That last part is the real feature. Not the data. The fact that it is already in your subscription and already next to everything else.
If you are an in-house SEO who checks AI visibility once a week to see roughly where you stand, this is often all you need. Do not let anyone, me included, talk you into a second invoice you will not use.
Where the bundle is genuinely enough
Be honest with yourself about your actual usage. The bundle covers you well when:
- You track one brand, in one or two markets, in mostly one language.
- You want a directional read, share of voice and a rough trend, not a forensic breakdown.
- You check it weekly or monthly, not daily.
- You do not need to hand a client a branded report.
- Your reporting lives inside the SEO suite you already use, and you like it there.
If that is you, open the AI tab in the tool you already pay for and go. Spending more would be waste.
I mean that. I would rather you use what you have well than pay me for capacity you never touch.
Where the bundle stops answering you
The suites are built as one feature inside a large product. That is their strength for convenience and their ceiling for depth. You feel the ceiling in a few specific places.
Model coverage. The suites cover the big engines, but AI search is not just ChatGPT and Gemini anymore. Your buyers use Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews, and increasingly Claude. When a prospect tells you "I asked Claude and you weren't there," you need a tool that actually watches Claude.
Update frequency and prompt volume. Bundled tools tend to give you a fixed, often modest number of tracked prompts and slower refresh. If you are running real GEO work, you want more prompts and fresher data, because you are changing things and need to see the effect this week, not next month.
The "why," not just the "what." The suites tell you your share of voice dropped. They are thinner on why. Which exact phrasing does the model use about you. Which competitor got cited instead and from which page. What sentence in an AI answer is quietly wrong about your product. That is the work that actually moves the number, and it needs depth the bundle was not designed for.
Real traffic, not just mentions. A mention is nice. A conversion is the job. Suites tend to stop at visibility and leave the "did any of this send me customers" question unanswered.
Client reporting. If you are an agency, you cannot hand a client a report with someone else's logo on it. The bundles are not built to be white-labelled per client.
When you hit two or three of these at once, the bundle has stopped answering you. That is the signal to look at a specialist, not before.
What the specialists add, and where each one is best
This is a healthy category with several good tools. Here is my genuinely fair read, and I will tell you where each one beats me.
Profound is the enterprise heavyweight. The deepest data in the category: prompt volumes, shopping, agent analytics, plus SOC 2, SSO and on-prem options. There is no public pricing and it is demo-led, with enterprise deployments reportedly in the low thousands per month. If you are a large brand or a Fortune 500 team with a procurement process and a security review, Profound is often the right call, and I will say so to your face.
Peec AI is strong for teams and agencies, with good regional and multi-language tracking and competitor comparison by country. It starts around $89/month. Worth knowing: it includes three models and extra ones are paid add-ons priced per model, so check the real total for the engines you care about.
Otterly.ai is the cheapest honest entry, from $29/month, and it shows you screenshots of the real AI outputs plus a solid Brand Visibility Index and AI keyword research. If budget is your hard constraint and you want to see actual answers, Otterly is a smart place to start.
And LLM Pulse, the one I build. I will not pretend it wins on everything. Profound has more raw enterprise depth. Otterly is cheaper at the very bottom. What LLM Pulse is built for is the messy middle where most serious operators actually live: you have outgrown the suite, you do not want an enterprise sales cycle, and you need depth plus flexibility today.
Concretely, that means:
- Public pricing from 49 € a month. No demo required to find out the price.
- Five core models on every plan (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews), with Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI available as additions. More models without an enterprise call than most of the category.
- Unlimited seats on every plan. No per-seat tax, which matters the moment more than one person wants to log in.
- Real AI traffic analytics. Connect GA4 or Plausible and see the actual visits, conversions and sales that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini send you, not just mentions.
- Full white-label for agencies: your logo, your colours, your domain, a separate project per client, plus a Looker Studio connector and REST API for reporting.
- A hosted MCP server with 45+ tools over OAuth, no API key, included on every plan and even the trial. You pull your data straight into Claude or ChatGPT and ask questions of it directly. That last one is still rare in this category.
Reputation and sentiment show the exact words AI uses about you and flag wrong or negative framing. Per-page bot tracking tells you when GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot actually crawled you. It is bootstrapped and profitable, which is my problem to worry about, not yours, but it is why the pricing is public and stays that way.
A rough pricing picture
Numbers as of September 2026. Prices in this category move constantly, so check every vendor before you buy. This is a starting-point map, not a quote.
| Tool | Entry price | Public pricing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush AI Toolkit | Bundled in your Semrush plan | Yes (suite) | Already paying for Semrush |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Bundled in your Ahrefs plan | Yes (suite) | Already paying for Ahrefs |
| Otterly.ai | 29 $/month | Yes | Tight budget, seeing real outputs |
| Peec AI | ~89 $/month | Yes | Teams, regional and multi-language |
| LLM Pulse | 49 €/month | Yes | Depth, models, analytics, white-label |
| Profound | Low thousands/month (reported) | No, demo-led | Enterprise, Fortune 500 |
LLM Pulse plans, for reference: 49 € Starter (50 prompts, 5 competitors), 99 € Growth (150 prompts, adds sentiment, AI traffic analytics and the agent), 299 € Scale (450 prompts, adds Reputation, GEO testing, ChatGPT Shopping, REST API and the Data Studio connector), then 543 € and 1.086 € tiers, and custom Enterprise above that. There is a 14-day trial and the MCP server is included in it.
The actual decision
Strip away the vendor noise and it comes down to a sequence, not a battle.
Start with what you have. If you pay for Semrush or Ahrefs, use their AI features first. Learn what questions you keep asking that they cannot answer.
Move to a specialist when the bundle stops answering those questions: when you need more models, more prompts, the exact wording of what AI says about you, real traffic data, or a client-ready report with your own logo on it.
Pick the specialist that fits your shape. Big brand with procurement, Profound. Rock-bottom budget, Otterly. The demanding middle where you need depth without an enterprise contract, come look at LLM Pulse and start the trial.
The tool you never open is always overpriced, and the tool that finally answers the question keeping you up at night is always cheap. Buy on that, not on the feature grid.
